Navis: New Technology, New Owner

March 29, 2021

Navis had two major announcements in less than a week: a new rail workforce management module—and a new owner, Accel-KKR.

Navis, a software provider for terminal, vessel and carrier as well as inland freight operators, reported that Accel-KKR has reached an agreement to acquire it from Cargotec Corp. Accel-KKR is a technology-focused investment firm based in the Silicon Valley. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are thrilled to welcome the entire Navis team to the Accel-KKR portfolio of market-leading software companies,” Managing Director Park Durrett said. “In today’s world, the movement of goods for a vast array of shippers and operators has increased exponentially in volume, velocity and complexity, amplifying the need for powerful workflow optimization and full visibility into every corner of supply chains. Navis will extend Accel-KKR’s focus on investing in solutions that can drive toward a true end-to-end, all-in-one execution and visibility platform that shippers and operators have been seeking.”

Additionally, Navis Rail has developed a new module for its cloud-based Rail Planning Suite that “will help freight railroads optimize and manage crew scheduling, master rosters and working rosters,” the company said. “It provides tools to manage short-term changes to timetables and staff availability; electronically capture and record staff attendance; and extract reports for payroll and analytics.”

The rail-specific module also takes into account “personnel, route, traction, workflow, rules, regulations, labor agreements and other constraints,” said Tom Forbes, Head of Navis Rail.
